Status Update - April 2024

Updated 2 months ago

It seems that cackleheim has finally broken into an unignorable state.

From some testing of my own it seems like it points to shader issues. Likely the custom material built into the code that gets applied to the vanilla model to hide it as the blacksmith tools version still seems to work.

However it also seems to affect the items using styles for the color variants, so it's busted either way.

Luckily Valheim does offer the last previous build as a beta option. If you go to properties on valheim in steam, then to the beta tab and change it to default_old

You'll also need to downgrade Jotunn to version 2.18.2. That's the last version of it prior to the latest valheim patch, so it's upload date will be before April 10th.

Unfortunately, it might be awhile before I post any updates to fix it as the code had already fallen out of compatibility to jotunn quite a while back and any attempts to recompile it was met with errors, however the public version was still stable enough and playable, so it wasn't a very high priority to fix.

Alas it seems that increasing gap has finally caught up to it.

So due to this, I believe I've got an overdue status update on how things have been behind the scenes for the mod.

I've not given up on the mod, but to be honest I don't really want to update the code in its current state which is why it wasn't a very high priority for me to update the mod to keep up compatibility. It's served me well, but due to the limitations of being a suit of armor, I feel like I can't quite do all I want with it and would rather the effort be put into a new foundation. As such, a friend has been working on a new code base that I hope to migrate to eventually once it's finished, though we're keeping our eyes out for the ashlands update.

Plus it started to eat me up a bit that the initial base model was just a heavily modified copy of the vanilla model and it didn't really feel right after awhile that it wasn't fully my own model along with the restrictive feeling I had from being limited to the vanilla bones and so I've been wanting to start fresh with a new base model and rig that is my own.

As you can likely guess that does mean the current form of it will change and I already have made a new model, much more gremlin like than how the current one looks. It could still end up changing up a bit, but atm it's drifting to more my usual style of creature shapes

I still plan to keep the old version available too though and migrate it to the new code later on too, keep it in a sort of maintenance mode for those that prefer it. However there's no current plans to continue to update it beyond that.
